Love At First Bite – Mango With Sweet Sticky Rice

Many dishes, fruits, sauces and so on… got ‘labeled’ in one way or another. To be honest, I think that rice definitely didn’t get the place of honor in the west as it has in Asia. In the west rice is nothing more then a side dish you eat with other dishes. or at best mix it with something. I guess the whole concept of rice, or ‘the pyramid of rice’ (just made that up) is reversed in Asia, were rice is the main food and the other dishes (such as meat, curries, etc…) come in small quantities and usually on top of the rice.
I think diversity would be the best word one should use when it comes to rice. Before my travels to Asia, like most people I knew basmati, short grain, long grain…but that’s about it.
and later discovered that rice comes in a rainbow of colors (green, brown, yellow’ish, white, black…) it’s just remarkable! .
I think that the Thais really got the feeling of rice. if you were to take a peak into the thai kitchen you will find so many things that orbit around rice that are related to the seasons of the year.
One of the most popular Thai dishes would be Khao Neow MaMuang. This ‘orgasmic’ combination of sweet sticky rice, coconut milk and mango slices is so finely tuned that either you’ll eat your dish real fast to get another one or just order 2 on the spot. it’s just good! …..what am I talking about…it’s incredible!
I love sticky rice…finally a great food that you can eat with your hands and make shapes with. No matter how many times my parents tried to convince me to use a fork I always preferred eating with my hands (and still do when i have the chance) …there’s just a ‘click’ between you and the food when you can actually feel it and not just dissect it with a fork and a knife in a slow movement like you were some kinds of surgeon. Eating is all about smelling, tasting and feeling the food. it’s a celebration…well, at least that’s my opinion
