Chestnuts cracked in the stove

If there’s one person in the world who doesn’t celebrate Christmas but loves the colors and food, it’s me. For years I would envy so much the chill that the month of December brings with it, the snow, the lights. It’s not so much the massive present shopping or opening the gifts, it’s the food!.

Christmas has its tradition in Europe and brings simple things like baking THE best christmas cookies (or buying them to the majority of us)  to the top of the list of important things right about 2 slots below finding a solution to the global warming.

Love At First Bite – Mango With Sweet Sticky Rice

(Sweet Sticky Rice With Mango – Image by Ifood.tv )

Many dishes, fruits, sauces and so on… got ‘labeled’ in one way or another. To be honest, I think that rice definitely  didn’t get the place of honor in the west as it has in Asia.  In the west rice is nothing more then a side dish you eat with other dishes. or at best mix it with something.   I guess the whole concept of rice, or ‘the pyramid of rice’ (just made that up) is reversed in Asia, were rice is the main food and the other dishes (such as meat, curries, etc…) come in small quantities and usually on top of the rice.

Have You Eaten Yet? (Bao-zi)

Upon arriving to China, “ni chifàn le ma” (have you eaten yet? ) was one of the first expressions i’ve heard from the locals. at first I actually thought that they were ‘psychic’ or something and knew that I came to
eat everything i’m not familiar with (excluding dog and other things like that).

Only later I found out that this greeting means ‘how are you?”
strange no ? ….well, not really.
basically it tracks back to the time where there was nothing to eat in the mainland
and if you had something to eat, probably everything is good on your end.

Thai Sweets 101 – Eat First Think Later?

May 12, 2010 2 comments

Now Doubt about it ...Thai sweets are wonderful!
Today I had an incredible experience, I found a little shop not too far from the northern gate of Chiang Mai, Thailand that’s been doing authentic thai sweets close to 3 decades.
I spent there over 1 hour, tasting, experiencing and listening to stories about the making of these desserts. If you get to Chiang Mai, Thailand…..don’t even think about missing out on Mrs Kwanta’s shop.
