Banana Que – Your Life Is On A Stick ? Banana Que (The Filipino Version)

Over the last 2 weeks I was wondering around the Philippines. Doing some Island hopping, diving and off course searching for gastronomic treasures.
There’s a good chance that I didn’t reach any ‘culinary enlightenment’ of any sort in the Philippines (and trust me, I tried real hard to find great, unique or tasty food
But that’s irrelevant.
If you’re a sea food lover, then the Philippines rocks!. I stayed a few nights in a little diving village in the island of Cebu called Moalboal. Despite the unpronounceable name that this place has it was a true gem. The whole town is a street an a half. and thanks to the fact that there’s nothing much going on there besides diving and get ready …. a bottle museum (a creative thing to do with all the empty liqueur bottles that people threw away) . The town’s fishermen walk this little street with the latest catch in a bucket. It’s such a pleasure to step outside your little guest house to find a guy offering you 1/2 a meter long of fresh Tuna fish for $1.5….i’m telling you, life is good!
Off course I buy first and take care of the logistics later… So considering the fact that I could use the kitchen in my place I was staying as well as the BBQ (problem solved!). All there was to do was just to throw these lovely Tune fish on the grill and add some garlic and some salad on the side …oh and the secret ingredient (a glass of ice cold ‘Red Horse’ beer while you’re grilling the fish)
So after lazing around in the sun, and moving elegantly (yea right) underwater with 2 dives in the area…it was time to move on to the next town. Now instead of buying snacks, chips or neon pink sausages (don’t ask) for the road, there’s something even cooler to eat on the never ending bus rides – Banana Que.
To be honest, at first glance, there’s nothing special looking with this BBQ’d banana. However, these grilled bananas are not the ones you’re used to buy in your local supermarket, rather a different kind which is smaller and has a bit of a sour kick to it (unless you cook, grill it, hence the BBQ ). The cool thing is the topping, the Banana Que comes in slight variations (plain, covered with thin spring roll look a like kinda dough) but one thing is common to all…the topping. The banana Que has wonderful sticky caramel cover on it that works great to balance the sourness of this banana.
Basically….though it on a stick and grill it ….don’t worry we’ll probably eat it with a smile
